The Via Francigena, from Gambassi Terme to Siena

One of the finest stretches of the Italian Via Francigena: sixty-four kilometres of white gravel roads, cypress avenues and medieval towns, from Gambassi Terme to Siena by way of San Gimignano and Monteriggioni.

The route, stage by stage

1. Stage 1 — From Gambassi Terme to San Gimignano 13.5 km · easy · km 13.5

   A short, gentle stage to settle into the rhythm of the walk, arriving among the towers of San Gimignano.

2. Stage 2 — From San Gimignano to Monteriggioni 30 km · challenging · km 30

   The long stage of the route, ending at the walls of Monteriggioni. If thirty kilometres is too much for the group, the guide can split it by starting from Colle di Val d'Elsa.

3. Stage 3 — From Monteriggioni to Siena 20.5 km · moderate · km 20.5

   The final leg, entering Siena through the historic pilgrims' gate.
