A themed woodland trail with large installations devoted to the fox, the hedgehog, the squirrel and the woodpecker. An hour's walk on gravel: built for children, and it works for adults too.

The Wald-Wild-Wunder-Weg — the 'wild woodland wonder trail', known in Italian as the Sentiero Selvaggio delle Meraviglie — is a themed route starting from the centre of Soprabolzano. Along the way you come across large installations devoted to woodland animals: fox, hedgehog, squirrel, woodpecker and others, with games and interactive panels.

It is designed above all for children, but the installations are well made and the route stays enjoyable for adults too. The surface is gravel and some sections can be managed with an off-road pushchair.

Highlights

The woodland animal installations

Each station tells the story of a species that genuinely lives in these woods, with games that ask children to search, listen or touch rather than simply read.

Getting there

The starting point is the centre of Soprabolzano, twelve minutes from Bolzano on the Renon cable car. If you are staying nearby, a car transfer from your hotel to the trailhead is included.

Good to know

The walk takes about an hour and is the shortest on the Renon: the right choice for a first day, or an afternoon with small children.

Anyone wanting to walk further can link it to the Lobishof farm or to the Freud Promenade, making a loop of eight or nine kilometres in two and a half to three hours.

Routes may change according to trail and weather conditions.

The route, stage by stage

  1. Setting off from the centre of Soprabolzano Wald-Wild-Wunder-Weg

The trail starts in the village centre and climbs straight into the woods, with the first installations a few minutes in.

  2. Among the woodland installations Themed trail

The middle section crosses the forest between the themed animal stations. Gravel surface, gentle gradient.

  3. Back to Soprabolzano Wald-Wild-Wunder-Weg

The last stretch drops back to the starting point. Anyone wanting to go further can continue towards the Lobishof farm.
