August in the Po Delta is a month of transition: the breeding colonies are emptying out and the autumn passage begins, long and drawn out, with the first waders on migration over the mudflats. It is also the hottest month of the year and the one with the most mosquitoes: timing matters more than ever.
August marks the start of the autumn passage
From August to October the Delta enters the autumn passage phase: migrating waders concentrate on the exposed mudflats, especially at low tide, and the late-summer light is among the best of the year for observation. Compared with June and July, when attention is on the breeding colonies, August shifts the focus towards birds on the move.
Heat and mosquitoes: the right times
The first two hours after sunrise remain the best time, and even more so in August: lower temperature, less active mosquitoes, and waders moving more on the mudflats before the heat scatters them. Late evening is the second option, though with more mosquitoes than the morning.

Going out mid-morning, thinking "the birds will be there anyway". With rising heat and mosquitoes, and waders scattering across the mudflats as the tide changes, the good window narrows much faster than in other seasons. Checking the tide tables before setting off remains the most useful piece of advice, even more so in August.
